An Energizing, Restful Weekend at Camp!

Monday, August 1st 2016

We had an awesome weekend packed with fun, but we also managed to get rested up for the second half of Classic 4! The Buckeyes and Birches arrived back to camp after breakfast from their Tribal and Cabin Campouts just in time for a day filled with Tribal Activities on Saturday. The tribes participated in many different activities all throughout the day including game rotations within the Lodge, a team-based and strategic time on the Challenge Course, table games, and some of the campers’ favorite shirt-tail-tag games. Two Free Swim times were also very much appreciated on such a warm summer day. Our Saturday at camp definitely allowed a lot of time for getting to know cabinmates and enjoying exciting activities around camp. We closed the day with cabin devotions, discussing how we can follow Jesus’ instruction to love our enemies (Luke 6:27-36).

Sunday morning came later with an 8:45am breakfast allowing for some extra rest, except for the campers with a little bit of extra ambition who decided to get up early to complete the Mile Swim. They worked hard to qualify for it earlier in the week and were excited to rise to the challenge Sunday morning (along with some encouragement from the fact that they would receive a black swim band, donuts, and hot chocolate upon completion). After a delicious breakfast that involved more donuts for the rest of camp, the campers headed to church with their tribes. Their Tribal Directors led them in a time of worship, fun songs, and discussion of scripture.

Everyone met back outside of Eden Hall for a picnic lunch of corn dogs, chips, and fruit. Although the campers were excited about having corn dogs for lunch, they were somewhat disappointed as we sent them off to extended rest period without dessert. Little did they know, they would arrive back to the lawn after their rest time to find an ice cream sundae bar set up for them! The multiple flavors of ice cream to choose from and all the toppings they could imagine were such a thrill for all of the campers. Once they were sugared up and satisfied with having gotten some dessert, they headed off to more Tribal Activities. The Buckeyes and Birches participated in Cabin Activities, so they were spread out all over camp with their cabins doing so many different things. All of Deer Camp met on the Golf Course to play a strategic, team-based game of Risk, while Mountain Camp had an extremely competitive time of Waterfront Olympics between the Poplars and Sycamores.

Tribal Activities wrapped up and the campers went straight into free time before dinner. After a filling dinner of baked chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, and rolls all of the campers went to Council with their individual camps. This was a sacred time for them to recognize positive qualities in other campers and themselves and to realize how they all have grown so far this session. Sunday’s Bible story came to us from Luke 10:25-37, The Good Samaritan. The campers discovered that there are always opportunities for them to be “Good Samaritans” at camp since we live together in community. We’ll be looking for those opportunities to serve one another in the week ahead!
