5 Days, 5 Shows

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

5 Days, 5 Shows, over 20 hours on the road. We hit the road hard this week for the Pride of All the South, ending the week with Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Both shows were great, in Baton Rouge we started the night off by watching Nick Patty and Episcopal High beat their rivals Parkview Baptist 14-0! Drew and Robin were great hosts, and were joined by a host of Rockmont vets and new faces.

In New Orleans, we were hosted by Becky, Kamran, and Spencer Zaheri, and it was great to see them again after the show last year. We had a good number of new guys there that had a lot of questions and interest about camp. It was also my first show this year that I took the lead in, even it was great to have Dan there to fill in the blanks and provide clarity for the parents.

During all these shows and driving, we did manage to have some fun in New Orleans! We went on a run through the city each morning, doing a self-tour of the French Quarter. The history of the city is incredible, and it was humbling to stand in St. Peter’s Cathedral, looking at the oldest frescos west of Rome.

>We closed the week by having dinner in Auburn with several members of the Rockmont family, and I’ll see if I wake up early enough to go on a run around the Auburn campus before we depart for home.

By the way, the Blogger photo upload only lets me add 2 photos to each post, so I’ll be linking the photos from the week in Facebook and Picasa. If you want, join the Facebook group at facebook.com/rockmont.

Thanks again guys, I’ll talk to you again soon!

First Shows of the Year

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Wow! It has been a great few days here on the road for the Dan, Matt, and Morgan. 10 hours in the car, criss-crossing 5 states on the first recruiting trip of the year. Sunday, we were at the home of Stewart and Missy Cox, and their sons McKinnon and Miller, and it was great to see the Birmingham crew together again. It was the first show of the new season, and we had a great time telling the Rockmont story to new families, and continuing the conversation with the Vets. We were blessed to be able to visit and stay with Mountain Camp Director Scott Radbill, just days before he departs for Bulgaria. Keep him in your prayers as he departs on this great time in his life!

Monday we were in Madisonville, LA for a show at the home Karen and Tim Lindsay, and their son Miles. It was a great show, complete with attendance by Indiana Jones! We had to traverse the 24 mile bridge covering Lake Pontchartrain, on our way there and back, what a marvel of engineering!

Here are some pictures so far, we’ll keep you updated on the Baton Rouge and New Orleans trips!

August at the Rockmont Farm

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Michael Lusco, Jonathan Cooper, Nick Franzese, Jonathan Kopelman, Charles Keen, Troy D’Alesandro and Quill Yates proved to be excellent salesmen at the Riceville Road Farmers Market this summer. Each Saturday a few Homesteading campers had the chance to sell some of Rockmont Farm bounty (and increase the sales of the chocolate vender with their profits!) It has been a productive summer at the Rockmont Homestead. During the summer much of the produce harvested from the garden was cooked and eaten by campers at homesteading skill – turnips, swiss chard, kale, popcorn, tomatilla salsa, squash and much more was eaten with enthusiasm (usually). We were also able to send loads of produce to the dining hall kitchen to be used by the Rockmont vegetarian cook.

Today the garden is receiving some much needed rain.
The sorghum is now 8-12 feet high. It should be a good crop for making molasses later in the fall. Thanks to the hard work of many homesteading campers weeding, hoeing and hilling, we should also have plenty of popcorn and field corn (Mmmm – corncakes) for next summer.

All of the chickens that were hatched and then shipped to us via US mail are now laying very well. The Rockmont community is enjoying 6-8 eggs a day as well as plenty of tomatoes, okra, sweet corn, tomatillas, swiss chard, green beans and more.
