Spreading Our Wings

Tuesday, July 8th 2014

Cole, one of our Buckeye campers, approached me proudly today and announced that he no longer felt any homesickness. I’ve had the privilege of hearing some of Cole’s story this session, largely through my wife. Cole befriended Elise and my two sons early on this session and gave them regular updates on his time at camp as he passed by our house. Elise recalled a moment when our four year-old son Joseph consoled and encouraged Cole with some success, echoing thoughts that he had heard from Elise. What a gift Cole gave my son in that moment. And what a gift Cole has received from his parents, who trusted enough to let Cole spread his wings here at camp. He had a huge smile on his face and bubbled with enthusiasm when I talked to him today.

The campers had a full day of skills today. They are making significant strides – learning to belay climbers, roll kayaks, throw pottery, set turtle traps, hit targets, and harvest crops, among other things. Just as important, they are learning to carry on with grace after not hitting their target.

Today’s activities were fueled by French toast, sausage, grits, yogurt, cereal, fruit, and juice this morning. Lunch consisted of chicken sandwiches, chips, fruit, salad, and frozen fruit bars, followed at dinner by mac and cheese with meat, carrots, salad, dinner rolls, and animal crackers.

Tonight, Rockmont is breathing deep before a full day of tribal activities tomorrow. Tonight, for the Birch, Hickory, and Hemlock Tribes, rest means kicking back and watching a movie. For our oldest campers, the Sycamores, it means having the waterfront to themselves on a glorious evening. For the Poplars, it means cooking over a campfire up on the mountain. For the Buckeye Tribe – rest means enjoying a more civilized campout – in their lodge – s’mores and all.

Inspired to be at camp
