The Fiery Furnace

Sunday, July 5th 2015

During staff church this morning, I had the amazing opportunity to deliver a homily on our scripture passage of the day, Daniel 3:8-29, The Fiery Furnace. In this amazing story of faith, Shadrach Meshach and Abednego trust in God for their deliverance. They trust in his power and his love for them. This is a story that directly relates to our campers, because these men of faith were willing to step toward risk, toward uncertainty, and toward trust. That is the story of camp! Every day your boys are taking steps forward in trusting who they are, trusting each other, and in trusting God. Each day they are faced with challenges and each day they must trust they are up to the task. Stories of the Bible are great ways to see the heart of God at work in and around us all. I welcome you all to join us in reading our scripture passages and to walk with us on this journey of faith.

Today some campers started early with the “challenge by choice” mile swim. Breakfast was served at 8:45 with Krispy Kreme Donuts, eggs, bacon, and grits. An extended cabin cleanup followed breakfast, and their Tribal Director personally reviewed each cabin in front of the campers. Camper and staff church followed cabin cleanup and every camp and staff heard an age appropriate message from the same passage out of Daniel 3.

Lunch was inside Eden Hall and included baked chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and rolls. As with all of Sunday, we enjoyed some more “flex” time with an extended rest period. Sunday Sundaes followed the rest period, which then transitioned all the camps to various activities around camp.

Dinner, which is typically outside on Sundays, came inside because of a early evening rain shower. Your boys enjoyed corndogs and cookies for their dinner fare. Following dinner, the camps broke up towards their council sites where each will reflect on the passage of the day again but with a different context.

Sundays are an amazing chance to slow down and reflect on the journey we all embarked on seven days ago. With much risk comes much reward. The trust shown in bringing your boys to camp has provided great opportunities for your boys to trust in themselves, their brothers, and in God. We are incredibly grateful to be on this journey with them and with you.

In gratitude,
Drew Fowler
Program Director
