Staff FAQ

If you have any questions, we would love to tell you more in person! Check out our Travel Calendar to see if we’re coming to a college or university near you. Here are some answers to a few frequently asked questions until we can talk further:

How long is the job and when do I need to be there?

All staff need to attend a week of training that begins Monday, June 4th and runs through Saturday, June 9th. Some staff will be required to arrive earlier than June 4 for position-specific training. We are primarily looking for staff who can then serve throughout the summer until August 11th. Some staff can only be with us for part of the summer. If so, your contracted time will need to line up with one of our camper sessions.

Will I have time off?

Camp work means long hours and a whole lot of “on” time. We do want staff to have time to step back and re-charge. Scheduled time off usually amounts to at least 1 day and 1 night off during each session, and additional time off between each session. Days off begin after breakfast; nights off begin after supper. Days and nights off end at 12:30 a.m.

Can I bring my poodle?

The camp cannot accommodate additional pets, so you will need to make other arrangements for yours. You will be met by a wonderful pack of camp dogs that will quickly adopt you as one of their people.

Where do I do laundry?

Staff member’s laundry is done weekly at the camp laundry facilities by members of our Work Crew. If you prefer to do your own laundry, you may visit the local laundromat about 2 miles away.

Do I need a car?

A personal vehicle is not necessary. Your meals, lodging, laundry, health needs, and fun are all provided here at camp. You can usually get a ride into town with another staff member when you have scheduled time off. Camp is about ten minutes from Black Mountain and twenty minutes from Asheville. If you choose to fly into the Asheville or Greenville-Spartanburg airports, camp will make arrangements to pick you up.

Will I have internet access and cell phone coverage?

While we have one computer that is available for staff use, many staff members bring their own laptops to camp. Cell phone coverage is available, but spotty depending upon your provider. Computer and cell phone use is limited to specific times and designated areas. Staff usage of these items is a privilege that is not available to campers, so staff must use discretion with them. Additionally, staff members assume all risk associated with bringing expensive items to camp.

Can friends or family visit me at camp?

Your friends and family members are welcome to visit you on your days and nights off. All visitors must be checked in at the Round House to receive a visitor pass. You may show them around camp’s public areas, however, we cannot accommodate them for meals or lodging.
