“If you want to go fast, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together.” African Proverb
Greeting, parents and friends of Rockmont. It has been a wonderful four days of camp. Three of the tribes (half of camp) returned yesterday from camping for two nights. They had a fine time and most of them will be glad for tonight’s sleep in their bunk. They have stories of long hikes, beautiful views, and new friendships.
One of the exciting programs at camp this summer is our newest program the Service Leadership Corps, or SLC for short. Seventeen young men between the ages of 16-18 are serving in several areas of camp. Their mission is: “to LEARN together and practice responsibility, communication, and cooperation as they SERVE in a positive, supportive environment – making contributions that are vital to our camp community.”
The program is being lead by two Rockmont veterans, Jeff Bowen and Brooks Ballard. They are off to a good start and I continue to be impressed by their hard work and efforts in serving others. Their hard work has allowed us to bring back the old tradition of family style meals for the Bear Campers. This is a huge gift to the campers and staff.
I had the privilege to join them for an adventure Monday afternoon. I was touched by new friendships that were encouraging and supportive of each other. These young men embody many of the hopes we have for the growth of the boys and young men at Rockmont. They are living out the final stage of the Hero’s journey, Return and Contribution. They will have to repeat this stage dozens of times in their lifetime and I am grateful to see these men flourish this summer. We are all better because of their willingness to serve and share.
